AAA School Safety Patrol

For more than 87 years, the AAA School Safety PatrolTM program has provided a safer pedestrian environment and a wide spectrum of educational opportunities for millions of schoolchildren.

Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter were patrollers. So was Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, former Chrysler Corporation Chairman Lee Iacocca and Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger.

Today, AAA sponsors 550,000 children serving as patrols in the United States.

The AAA School Safety PatrolTM program has been praised by safety and education groups around the globe for reducing injuries and deaths among 5- to 14-year-olds, the age group most at risk for pedestrian injury. The program also instills students with a sense of responsibility and leadership, as each day they protect classmates going to and from school.

To recognize the extraordinary efforts of the country's student protectors, AAA in 1949 began its AAA School Safety Patrol TM Lifesaving Award program, held in Washington, D.C.

Did You Know?

AAA was largely responsible for the passing of the 1956 Federal-aid Highway Act, the most ambitious public works program in the nation's history. It followed on the president's proposal to spend $50 billion on a 10-year highway construction program, the basis for the establishment of the Highway Trust Fund.
