Air Travel Safety

The nature of air travel changed dramatically on Sept. 11, 2001.

Prior to the terrorist attacks, the primary concerns were consumer convenience and addressing a growing gap between demand for air travel and the capacity of the system to deliver it. Making the most of limited airspace, reforming the air traffic control system, building more runways and terminals and better treatment of air travelers were the focus of debate.

While capacity expansion and the fair and courteous treatment of passengers remains important, today's air travelers care most about safety and security.

In response to terrorist attacks, AAA supported efforts to stabilize the aviation industry and to overhaul airport security.

Shutting down the national airspace was a necessary and appropriate course of action in the wake of the terrorist attacks. But the consequences of that action proved to be devastating to the airline industry. The viability of the nation's air transportation system is critical to the financial health of the country and necessary for the cherished right of free movement by its people.

Regarding security improvements, AAA advocates:

  • Strong federal government oversight and accountability.
  • Stringent security procedures implemented uniformly across the nation.
  • Sufficient funding to implement new security measures.
  • Consumer access to information about security procedures and airline policies.
  • Efficient movement of passengers, baggage and cargo to the greatest extent possible consistent with security.
