Transportation Alternatives

Disability is Not the End of Mobility -- A disability does not necessarily mean that you must give up mobility. There are resources available to help people with disabilities find transportation solutions, adapt vehicles for their use, and benefit from rehabilitation efforts focused on driving skills.

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the U.S. government resource responsible for all disability rights. This organization provides information on public transportation facilities and mediation programs. Contact ADA at www.ada.gov or 800-514-0301.
  • The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) provides a list of equipment dealers in the United States and Canada, and contact information for disabled driver agencies. Contact NMEDA at www.nmeda.org or 800-833-0427.
  • The Association for Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED) is a nonprofit, professional organization for people that provide driver education and transportation equipment modifications for people with disabilities. Contact ADED at www.driver-ed.org or 919-529-1830.
  • The AAA Foundation also offers a list of paratransit services are usually offered for individuals with disabilities that prevent them from riding the fixed-route buses.
